Embu Water and Sanitation Company (EWASCO) was incorporated as a private company limited by ordinary share capital by Embu Municipal Council in March 2003. The Company became operational in March 2005 and the financial operations of the Company were separated from those of the Municipal Council in July 2005.
The company is wholly owned by the Embu County Government (ECG). The Company’s mandate is to provide water and sanitation services within Embu County serving four constituencies namely Manyatta, Runyenjes, Mbeere South and Mbeere North.As a Water Service Provider (WSP), EWASCO operates under a service provision license and in line with the Water Act, 2016, the company operations fall under the Tana Water Works Development Agency (TWWDA). EWASCO’s area of jurisdiction covers about 2025 km2 with an estimated population of 302,275 people in 2020 as per projections based on 2019 population census.EWASCO has two main water sources: Rupingazi and Thuci intake works for the Kanyuambora supply.The Company relies on gravitational flow for water distribution.
EWASCO has a Board of Directors which is responsible for overall leadership through provision of oversight and policy guidance. The board has the responsibility of establishing and maintaining full and effective control over the strategic, financial and operational direction of the company as well as ensuring compliance to policies and procedures.
